After the signing of the Paris Peace Accords on January 27, 1973, the United States Armed Forces withdrew and the South Vietnamese government was cut off financially by the United States while the North Vietnamese continued to enjoy financial and military support by the U.S.S.R. In the end, the South Vietnamese were defeated by the Viet Cong rebels and the North Vietnamese as they did not want to defend and fight for their country. Hence, the fall of Saigon occurred on April 30, 1975. The North-led Communist regime overthrew and integrated the South-led Republic of Vietnam, thus declaring the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on July 2, 1976. Subsequent conflicts with Cambodia and the People's Republic of China would soon follow.
As a legacy of its own history, the United States fought a war that it indeed won militarily, but inevitably lost politically.
